Left wants no reduction in Assembly seats of STs

The CPI and CPI(M) on Sunday said that there was unanimity among the Left parties that the existing number of seats for Scheduled Tribes (STs) should not be reduced in the State Assembly.

The two Left parties have come forward with probable solutions to the issue. One is that the Article 332 (3B) of the Indian Constitution should be amended so as to include Jharkhand with Tripura by way of which present proportion of ST seats in the State can be maintained irrespective of change of population profile.

State Secretaries of the CPI and CPI (M), Bhubneshwar Prasad Mehta and J.S. Majumdar, in joint statement, demanded the State government to press the Centre to bring a bill in the budget session of Parliament for amendment in the Constitution to make the tribal of Jharkhand on par with those in Tripura.
